Synopsis
A suspenseful and gripping psychological thriller, Lynne Ramsay’s WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN explores the fractious relationship between a mother and her evil son. Tilda Swinton, in a bracing, tour-de-force performance, plays the mother, Eva, as she contends for 15 years with the increasing malevolence of her first-born child, Kevin (Ezra Miller).

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN explores nature vs. nurture on a whole new level as Eva's own culpability is measured against Kevin's innate evilness. Ramsay's masterful storytelling simultaneously combines a provocative moral ambiguity with a satisfying and compelling narrative, which builds to a chilling, unforgettable climax.

Trailer

"A jaw-dropping performance by Glenn Close…brilliant. In tackling the most demanding role of her career, Close delivers a restrained, heartbreaking performance. Janet McTeer is excellent." - Marlow Stern, Newsweek

"A lovely and surprising movie. Great Acting…Glenn Close in 'Albert Nobbs' is surrounded by other exceptional actors, including Brendan Gleeson, Mia Wasikowska and especially Janet McTeer." - A.O. Scott, The New York Times

"Superb performances. Glenn Close entirely expresses the external life of a woman for whom maintaining appearances is truly everything. Janet McTeer goes at it with real gusto." - Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

"A career-crowning role for Glenn Close. Close brings far more to the part than a boyish haircut, stiff upper lip and deepened voice." - Peter Debruge, Variety

"A powerhouse performance from Glenn Close. Glenn Close and Janet McTeer are definitely serious Oscar® contenders." - Lou Lumenick, New York Post

"Janet McTeer explodes off the screen." - Sasha Stone, Awards Daily

"Glenn Close's work lives up to the hype. She performs flawlessly. Janet McTeer is astonishing." - Pete Hammond, Deadline Hollywood

"Janet McTeer's brilliant supporting performance has dignity, heart and heat." - Jeff Wells, Hollywood Elsewhere.com

"Hats off to Glenn Close. Really. She is fantastic." - Kristopher Tapley, Incontention.com

"An engaging, entertaining and enlightening piece of work that is richly dramatic. Glenn Close turns in an exquisitely detailed performance that truly is the core of the film. She creates a male character that is so honestly convincing you find yourself forgetting that you’re looking at Glenn Close. It’s a remarkable immersion of actor into character. ‘Albert Nobbs’ has much more to offer than just Close’s performance. But what a performance it is: one that doesn’t merely burnish, but absolutely cements her reputation as one of the finest actresses alive. A revelatory Janet McTeer matches Close beat for beat in their scenes together." - Michael Patterson, Indie Wire

"Terrific." - Leonard Maltin, IndieWire

"Janet McTeer is fabulous." - Anne Thompson - IndieWire

"Glenn Close is terrific. Janet McTeer is astonishing." - Catherine Shoard, The Guardian

January 24, 2012
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

84th Academy Awards® Nominations Announced

Beverly Hills, CA – Nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced today (Tuesday, January 24) by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2010 Oscar® nominee Jennifer Lawrence.

Sherak and Lawrence, who was nominated for an Academy Award® for her lead performance in “Winter’s Bone,” announced the nominees in 10 of the 24 Award categories at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference attended by more than 400 international media representatives. Lists of nominations in all categories were then distributed to the media in attendance and online via the official Academy Awards website, www.oscar.com.

Academy members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominations are selected by vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.

Nominations ballots were mailed to the 5,783 voting members in late December and were returned directly to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the international accounting firm, for tabulation.

Official screenings of all motion pictures with one or more nominations will begin for members this weekend at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Screenings also will be held at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood and in London, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area.

All active and life members of the Academy are eligible to select the winners in all categories, although in five of them – Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject and Foreign Language Film – members can vote only if they have seen all of the nominated films in those categories.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network beginning at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

However, when their 10 year high school reunion looms, the two of them realize that their lives are not impressive enough to cow the popular girls that tormented their teen years. Thu, 12 Jan 2012 00:42:00 -0800 Friday Night! - Hell High & Flower's in the Attic - 35mm Double-Feature Farewell 1/13/12 8:00PM http://www.phoenixmoviebears.com/friday-night-hell-high-flowers-in-the-attic-3 http://www.phoenixmoviebears.com/friday-night-hell-high-flowers-in-the-attic-3

Becky Bodacious' from Camp Cinema invites you to come say farewell to 35mm with some special screenings!

Facebook Invites
https://www.facebook.com/events/299611996741459/

35mm has been the dominant projection format in movie theaters for more than 120 years. It’s been said that by 2015 digital projection technology will replace film, worldwide.

With the closing of The Royale this past week, and many nights looking back at all the movies I’ve screened over the years, I’ve been feeling a little blue. Therefore, I’d like to go back to where it all began …for just one night.

On January 13th I will be presenting one final 35mm double-feature. As digital cinema continues to take over, this will likely be your last chance to experience the magic of repertory film here in the valley. During the closing credits of each film, audience members will be invited up to the projection booth to see how 35mm film projection works.

For my final hurrah, I’ve chosen two movies that mean a great deal to me.

First, HELL HIGH (1989) – the first feature I ever screened. This print is a true rarity (1 of 45 prints ever struck) and a forgotten gem of the 80’s slasher genre.

Feature Trailer: http://youtu.be/jK07cJks55o
(A teacher still haunted by the death of two teens that she accidentally caused as a young girl goes beserk when four teens start harassing her and then attack her in her home.)

Second, FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC (1987) – as requested by The Midnite Movie Mamacita, this gothic masterpiece is the epitome of camp. As always, there will be a variety of vintage trailers before each feature.

Feature Trailer: http://youtu.be/sWETE1BBjko
(After a tragic accident leaves them fatherless, four children return to their mother's mysterious family mansion hoping for an inheritance. But when they are imprisoned and abandoned by their evil grandmother, the children must survive a nightmare of brutal cruelty, forbidden passion and a final shocking discovery that will shatter...)

Sincerely,
Zack Attack

Synopsis

The Artist is a 2011 French romance film directed by Michel Hazanavicius, starring Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo. The story takes place in Hollywood between 1927 and 1932 and focuses on a declining male film star and a rising actress, as silent cinema grows out of fashion and is replaced by the talkies. Much of the film itself is silent; it is shot in black-and-white, and has received wide praise from critics and many accolades. Dujardin won the Best Actor Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where the film premiered. The film has six Golden Globe nominations, the most of 2011.

It's the late 1920s in Hollywood and handsome George Valentin is a silent movie idol. During the premiere of his latest film, Valentin meets Peppy Miller, a star-struck extra and aspiring actress. The two are attracted to each other and Peppy is given a small dancing role in his next picture. As their romance progresses, Valentin's producer has to cope with a love-struck star who is distracted on the set, Peppy's career begins to take off, and Valentin fears that a new fad in the movie business--talkies--will ruin him.

Synopsis
From director Steven Spielberg comes “War Horse,” an epic adventure for audiences of all ages. Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, “War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets — British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter — before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.

The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse—an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure. “War Horse” is one of the great stories of friendship and war— a successful book, it was turned into a hugely successful international theatrical hit that is arriving on Broadway next year. It now comes to screen in an epic adaptation by one of the great directors in film history.

DreamWorks Pictures’ “War Horse,” director Steven Spielberg’s epic adventure for audiences of all ages, is a tale of loyalty, hope and tenacity set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War.

Synopsis
Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as the world's most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, and Jude Law returns as his friend and colleague, Dr. Watson, in “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.”

Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the room…until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large—Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris)—and not only is he Holmes' intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may give him an advantage over the renowned detective.

Around the globe, headlines break the news: a scandal takes down an Indian cotton tycoon; a Chinese opium trader dies of an apparent overdose; bombings in Strasbourg and Vienna; the death of an American steel magnate… No one sees the connective thread between these seemingly random events—no one, that is, except the great Sherlock Holmes, who has discerned a deliberate web of death and destruction. At its center sits a singularly sinister spider: Moriarty.

Holmes' investigation into Moriarty's plot becomes more dangerous as it leads him and Watson out of London to France, Germany and finally Switzerland. But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead, and moving perilously close to completing his ominous plan. If he succeeds, it will not only bring him immense wealth and power but alter the course of history.

Filmmaker Guy Ritchie returned to direct “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” the follow-up to the smash hit “Sherlock Holmes.” The sequel also reunited producers Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey and Dan Lin. Bruce Berman and Steve Clark-Hall served as executive producers.

In her first English-speaking role, Swedish actress Noomi Rapace, who gained international attention in the Swedish film “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” plays a mysterious Gypsy named Sim, who becomes allied with Holmes and Watson in their quest to stop Moriarty. Jared Harris (TV's “Mad Men,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) joins the cast as the notorious Professor Moriarty. Stephen Fry (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”) plays Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock's decidedly eccentric older brother.

Returning from the first film, the cast also includes Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler; Kelly Reilly as Watson's bride, Mary Morstan; Eddie Marsan as Inspector Lestrade; and Geraldine James as Holmes's long-suffering landlady, Mrs. Hudson.

“Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” was written by Michele Mulroney & Kieran Mulroney. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were created by the late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and appear in stories and novels by him.

Ritchie once again collaborated with the behind-the-scenes team from the first movie, including director of photography Philippe Rousselot, production designer Sarah Greenwood, editor James Herbert, costume designer Jenny Beavan, and composer Hans Zimmer.
